VIC - Youth Media Festival

The Youth Media Festival will run concurrently with the Screen Futures Summit on Saturday 2 July. It is for young content makers and students working in the film, TV, radio, games and online spheres. For the first time ever, the festival will be programmed by ATOM in collaboration with prominent Melbourne youth media organisations ACMI Intermix, RMIT, SYN Media and Youthworx Media.

This one-day event will be a festival of ideas and collaboration between students and young content makers from all over Australia.

  • Live Media Event: a chance to crew on a unique, professional media production
  • Talks: Hear from a range of screen industry practitioners including producers, actors and screenwriters about their craft, the industry and their tips for breaking into a media career.
  • Workshops: Develop skills and knowledge in media production (online, television, radio, VR, digital design, music composition and interactive multiplatform).
  • Media careers session: a chance to connect with established screen professionals, universities and training organisations to find out exactly how to begin preparing for a career in screen media.

APRA AMCOS proudly presents: YMF Workshop: Composing Dynamic Music for Games

Composing for videogames is a unique opportunity to design new musical structures. What ideas do you have that game designers may really value?

In this two hour workshop, play and listen to games with exemplary musical systems, like FTL and Expand. Practice music testing functionality in FMOD, an industry middleware tool. Explore the different roles available to composers and sound designers, both in Australia and overseas.

Towards the end of the session, we’ll make simple dynamic music for one of three game levels. And each participant will be sent home with three Australian made independent games, to be redeemed on Steam, to inspire your future music making.

About the presenter:

Meghann O’Neill was a secondary school music teacher for five years before becoming a regular videogame reviewer for PC Powerplay magazine, eight years ago. She currently reviews 4 independent games per month, as well as writing a column about diversity and representation in gaming. She also teaches Sound in Interactive Media at The Australian Institute of Music in Sydney and runs The Game Ensemble, which makes a full game soundtrack every trimester. In her spare time, she composes music and is currently working on AGDA award winning Mallow Drops, by John Kane, and Wildfire, by Dan Hindes.
