PNG - Tony Subam Fellowship applications closing

The Wantok Musik Foundation, in association with APRA AMCOS, has announced the inaugural Tony Subam Fellowship.

The annual fellowship is open to any band in Papua New Guinea that has a strong element of cultural expression in their work, and is administered by the Wantok Musik Foundation.

Named after and in honor of the late Tony Subam, former member of the band Sanguma, which pioneered the use of traditional PNG music and songs in harmony with western styles of music, the winner of this prize will be a band or group who the judges believe build on exporting the different Papua New Guinea sounds and performances as Tony Subam had achieved with Sanguma and during his association with Wantok Musik Foundation up to his demise on Christmas Day 2011.

Tony had a strong belief that our traditional songs and sounds are unique to PNG music and that Papua New Guineans must be proud of their cultural heritage and roots. Wantok Musik Foundation shares this belief and the Tony Subam Fellowship ensures Tony’s belief lives on.

The recipient of the Tony Subam Fellowship will be awarded a recording session with acclaimed sound engineer and producer Emmanuel Muganaua in Port Moresby. The recordings will be released on the internationally-recognised Wantok Musik label alongside artists such as Telek, Ngaiire, Mogu, Airileke, Black Paradise from West Papua and the Pidia Kaur Group featuring William Takaku.

The leader of the group will be mentored by producer David Bridie to learn skills to assist the band to discover the right career path for their music. Additionally, two members of the band will be flown to Brisbane, Australia to attend the BigSound music conference to learn about ways of the world music industry.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the right band to carry on the great work done by artists such as Sanguma, Tambaran Culture, Tribes of Jubal, Airileke, Richard Mogu, and many others.

Coburg Night Market has today released the full details of 2018's musical program – your soundtrack to the market's food, drink and artisan offerings each Friday from November 30 - December 21.
Under the experienced and tasteful guidance of Emily Ulman, the Coburg Night Market's weekly performances have been curated to showcase the wonderfully diverse and consistently impressive local music scene. Each week's event will play host to two stages: one local independent record label's hand picked line-up, and Hope St Radio DJs providing the tunes to keep the vibe going.
Following to last week's announcement of November 30th's Aarght Records stage take-over (featuring Parsnip, Drug Sweat, J.McFarlane's Reality Guest and U-Bahn, with Hope St's Bayu and Moopie), three new hot line ups from local labels House of Beige, Lost and Lonesome and Hysterical Records have been added, completing the 2018 program.
Friday December 7,  in the shade of Bridges Reserve's leafy oaks, the indie label run by Remi and Sensible J,  House Of Beige, brings the inimitable DJ MzRizk, Digital Afrika and Cool Out Sun on stage, while Oscar Key Sung and Gian Manik keep the vibe high beyond the sunset. 
Revered Indie Pop label Lost and Lonesome summon the powers of Great Earthquake, Monnone Alone, Melbourne Cans and The Icypoles on December 14, with Woody and Merve working tirelessly to provide sound support.
And finally, Hysterical Records will throw an almighty Christmas Party on December 21, utilising the awesome talents of Dianas, Shiz Bish, HoT To RoT and Pinch Points to bring peak party alongside DJs Darcy Justice and Colette.
