UPDATE 13/5/2016: Sounds Australia receives Australia Council for the Arts funding, still needs Ministry of the Arts commitment to maintain service

APRA AMCOS was extremely disappointed to learn that funding was not allocated to SOUNDS AUSTRALIA in the recent Catalyst funding round.

The national contemporary music export initiative is funded through the Ministry for the Arts until December 31, 2016. Without additional funding, the initiative will not be able to offer its full annual program beyond that date.

Since its inception in 2009, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA has supported the careers of 620 Australian artists through its work at 48 different international events in 52 cities across 19 countries.

Some of the country’s largest musical exports, including Courtney Barnett, Chet Faker and Vance Joy, all played SOUNDS AUSTRALIA showcases in their first year of export, and all benefitted from repeat Sounds Australia performance opportunities in the year following.

For top tier artists, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA data indicates a 300% compound annual growth in individual earnings within three years of their first SOUNDS AUSTRALIA (and first international) appearance.

Over the past seven years, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA activity has resulted in 1292 new performance opportunities and 1593 business outcomes for Australian artists. These business outcomes include signing record deals, securing booking agents, locking in distributors, attracting publicists, landing synchronisation placements, securing publishing deals, generating international press and procuring brand endorsements.

In delivering these outcomes, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA has produced 97 networking/B2B events and 158 unique showcase presentations at numerous events around the world.

Catalyst is the Australian Government's funding program for the arts, investing in innovative projects and initiatives from arts and cultural organisations. Catalyst is designed to assist organisations to forge new creative and financial partnerships and stimulate innovative ways to build participation by Australians in our cultural life. The Ministry for the Arts administers Catalyst. Applications are assessed by a combination of independent and Ministry for the Arts assessors.

SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is Australia’s export music market development initiative, established to provide a cohesive and strategic platform to assist the Australian music industry access international business opportunities. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is a joint initiative of the Australia Council and APRA AMCOS, supported by the Federal Government together with State Government Agencies and Peak Industry Associations.
