Vote now for Song of the Year and you could win a $10,000 prize pack!

Thursday, 01 Dec 2016

The end of the year is nigh which means one thing: it’s time to flex your voting muscle. Choose your favourite song, your top banana, your main musical squeeze of 2016, and vote for it to be the APRA Song of the Year. It’s a chance to recognise the work of your songwriting peers while putting yourself in the running for a stellar prize pack at the same time.

The voting process is slightly different this year, and we’re only asking you to vote once. Your vote is due by 5pm (AEDT) Tuesday 17 January, 2017.

Once voting closes, we will tally the results and announce a shortlist of songs. A specialist voting academy of previous Song of the Year nominees will then vote for the APRA Song of the Year, and the winner will be announced at the 2017 APRA Music Awards.

By voting, you will automatically go into the draw to win a massive prize pack valued at around $10,000 which includes:

  • A Live 9 Suite compliments of Ableton
  • Delta return airfare from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, USA
  • Standard Day Recording package at Forbes Street Studios
  • 2 tickets to the 2017 APRA Music Awards in Sydney
  • A premium electric guitar and pro-audio package valued at $3,800

APRA members who are currently living in Australia or are Australian citizens living overseas (excluding New Zealand) are eligible to vote. You only get one vote, so use it wisely!

To be eligible, songs must have first been released in the 12 months from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016, and written principally by an Australian, or a New Zealand writer(s) living in Australia.

Previous winners have included Tame Impala’s Let It Happen and Feels Like We Only Go Backwards written by Kevin Parker; Sia’s Chandelier written by Sia and Jesse Shatkin; Vance Joy’s Riptide written by James Keogh and Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know written by Wally de Backer and Luiz Bonfa.

Need some inspiration and have a spare 21 hours? Here’s a playlist of more than 300 songs released in 2016*. Also handy for summer BBQs, long car trips and getting up to speed on what your fellow songwriters have been up to over the past year:

Log in to the Writer or Publisher Portal to vote, and have your say by Tuesday 17 January, 2017.

*This playlist has been put together using information from ARIA charts (including the Top 100, Physical, Digital, Urban and Dance/Club charts) as well as the Country Top 30 Chart, AIR Charts and the triple j Hottest 100. It’s intended as a guide only, and you may choose any work whether it is included or not - provided that it satisfies the eligibility criteria.
