How to finish your Art Music Fund application, by Eugene Ughetti

Art Music Fund applications are due Wednesday 20 February, 5pm AEDT

Dear composers, this is your annual reminder that time is of the essence to complete and submit your Art Music Fund application. The $100,000 fund supports Australian and New Zealand composers creating new commissioned work, and is now in its fourth year of allocating that sweet pool of money to recipients.

To be considered, though, you need to apply. And as the application does require a bit preparation and organisation, we asked Art Music Fund recipient Eugene Ughetti of Speak Percussion how he brought it all together in time for the deadline. His funded work Polar Force takes audiences on a sonic journey through the Antarctic in a special inflatable performance installation space, and in November had its world premiere at Arts Centre Melbourne.

Q: As a 2017 recipient of the Art Music Fund, can you share how you decided to apply? Did anyone in particular encourage you?

Eugene: The Art Music Fund struck me as an ideal opportunity to seek support for the creation of Polar Force. I knew about the fund from early on, the point at which it was it was first launched, and I was very encouraged that it was specifically for artists working within art music.

Q: What would you say was the key part of the application for you – in terms of what you really needed to pull together and finalise to be able to submit?

Eugene: The key was very much the ‘exploitation opportunities’. As far as I’ve understood it, the panel are interested in all the ways in which a new work can have a life beyond its creation.

Q: Can you give any tips to someone who is right now working on their application? 

Remember that your application isn’t only about creating a new work. It’s about proposing a strategy for how this new work will be heard, seen, accessed and how it will achieve a broad reach (which may include recordings, touring, documentation etc.).

Q: How did the Art Music Fund help make Polar Force a reality? Did the grant lead to other doors opening?

It was a critical step in the process of funding the work. The Art Music Fund helped me leverage further funds and support from government, presenters and collaborators.

Q: What’s next for Polar Force, yourself and Speak Percussion? 

I’m currently in the midst of a sold-out season of performances in Perth with Speak Percussion presented by PICA with support from TURA. The next confirmed outing is a tour to Europe and the release of the performance video.
