We nurture emerging talent by running competitions and initiatives for songwriters, composers and other members of the music industry throughout the year. These programs help people build successful and sustainable careers in the music industry.

Professional Development Awards

The Professional Development Awards boost the careers of Australian songwriters/composers every second year. The PDAs are awarded alongside Smugglers of Light Music and Media Award.

Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition

Named after the legendary songwriting partnership of Harry Vanda and George Young from Australian band The Easybeats, this competition offers a substantial cash prize and career opportunities to its winner and runners-up. The $50 entry fee is donated to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia. 


Hilltop Hoods Initiative

Co-presented with the Adelaide hip hop group, the Hilltop Hoods Initiative provides one rising Australian hip hop artist or band with $10,000 to release and promote a debut album.

The Lighthouse Award

Established in memory of Linda Gebar, The Lighthouse Award grants $5,000 to a female music manager in Victoria who exhibits passion, creativity and integrity. APRA AMCOS sponsors the award, and previous recipients include Jen Cloher, Bonnie Dalton and Bernadette Ryan.


Emily Burrows Award

The Emily Burrows Award was instituted in 2001 in memory of Emily Burrows, a former APRA AMCOS membership representative and compliance officer, who worked tirelessly to support and encourage South Australian songwriters and composers. The Award was established following her tragic, accidental death in 2000 and recognises and furthers the development of a South Australian artist or band annually with a $5,000 prize.
