Spotlight On: Canadian Music Week

The Aussie BBQ and Sound Gallery were staged along with the annual Meet the Australians reception, which had special support from the Australian High Commission, Canada.

Millie Millgate, Executive Producer, Sounds Australia, reflects, “There was so much attention on the Australian acts, it was incredible. A few people were coining it Australian Music Week. In only a few weeks since CMW, we have already started seeing some terrific results for artists that showcased.

The Agency Group quickly signed HOWQUA (with agent Adam Kreeft) and the Pierce Brothers (with agent Darcy Gregoire) for bookings in North America. The Pierce Brothers also attracted interest from Anuj Gupta from Indian promoters Only Much Louder for the NH7 Weekender Festivals in India, described by The Guardan as "India's answer to Glastonbury."

High profile LA-based Music Supervisor Joel C High was tweeting about Demi Louise following her Sound Gallery showcase and referencing her in very good company with the likes of Leon Bridges and Ryn Weaver.

Betty and Oswald are looking like recording additional tracks with producer Gavin Brown after connecting during the APRA AMCOS-run SongHubs program. Caitlin Harnett, Demi Louise, Phebe Starr, Lindsay Rimes and Morgan Evans also took part in this collaborative initiative.

Also at CMW was Damian Cunningham of the Live Music Office, “It was a great opportunity to talk with Music Canada and others – about our individual organisations, priorities, best practices and ongoing research efforts. We identified policy and legislation hurdles, shared live music resources and different funding models for Live Music. There is a definite plan to continuing these partnerships.”

Erin Benjamin of Music Canada Live agreed, “Learning from our friends in Australia will give the Canadian live music sector a keen advantage – as we understand the serious ‘heavy lifting’ they have done so well to advance live music at home and around the world. Our CMW meeting was historic, important – I think a great partnership is on the horizon.”

According to Millie Millgate building relationships is imperative. “For our artists, meeting the key global players gave them a unique platform to showcase their talent. For the countries coming together, it's a unique platform to build business relationships, share solutions and devise entry strategies for our respective artists moving into the international market.”
