ATSI songwriters: Polish your skills in Tamworth at Starting Ground workshop

Friday, 02 Oct 2015

Multi Award winner and APRA AMCOS Ambassador Leah Flanagan invites budding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island songwriters across the NSW North West to join her in a free skills workshop on 2 and 3 November.

“I would like to see Aboriginal artists based in regional areas have access to the same opportunities, training and support as artists based in major cities. Starting Ground is a way to connect these arts communities with the music industry on a needs basis as every region in NSW has its own unique scene.” Leah Flanagan said.

To be held at The Youthie, the Starting Ground workshop will encourage those living in ‘Aboriginal music hot spots’ like Tamworth to develop their career under the guidance of leading professionals.

Michael Hutchings of the APRA AMCOS ATSI office will facilitate the workshops and will be joined by professionals who will descend on the music-mad city for this special opportunity. Luke Peacock (self managed artist and songwriter), Rob Scott of Source Music (publishing and record label), Sophie Miles of Mistletone (publicity and marketing) and music producer Neal Sutherland will share their experience and insights with dozens of musicians who register on a first in, best dressed basis.

The two day workshop is split: one day for songwriting and production and live performance skills , the second to focus on business issues – how to get a gig, manage yourself in the industry,  how to get your song to radio, touring, publicity skills and marketing.

Starting Ground is an APRA AMCOS initiative co-funded by the NSW Government – ArtsNSW through its three-year Aboriginal Arts and Cultural Strategy. It will be hosted in four other regional centres as well as Campbelltown in the coming months.

“I believe that without the voice of Aboriginal NSW the whole story of the contemporary music scene in this state has not been told.” said Michael Hutchings, APRA AMCOS.
